Turning a Free Turkey into Fresh Ground Turkey

There’s something extra satisfying about stretching a freebie into something useful. This week, we put that free turkey from the store to good use — instead of roasting it whole, we broke it down and made our own ground turkey.
Why we love it:
• Budget-friendly: Free turkey = major savings. Grinding it ourselves means no extra cost for pre-packaged ground meat.
• Super fresh: Nothing beats the taste of freshly ground turkey compared to store-bought.
• Versatile: From tacos to meatballs, it’s ready to jump into any recipe.
The process was surprisingly simple: trim the meat, cube it, and run it through the grinder (or food processor if that’s what you’ve got). A little effort upfront, and now we’ve got pounds of ground turkey tucked away in the freezer, ready for quick weeknight meals.
Of course, the kids hovered around like I was running a turkey magic show. One asked if we could make “turkey nuggets” right then and there, while the other suggested turkey tacos for breakfast. My husband just grinned, already imagining himself as the official taste-tester. It turned into a whole family conversation about what we’d cook first — proof that even breaking down a bird can spark a little kitchen fun.
It feels good knowing we stretched that free turkey into something practical and delicious. Plus, there’s a certain pride in saying, “Yep, we made this ourselves.”
